Vieta Jumping is a method used in number theory to study integer solutions of quadratic Diophantine equations.
The main idea is to treat an equation as a quadratic in one variable. If one root is an integer, Vieta's formulas often show that the other root is also an integer.
We then replace the original root with the other root to obtain a new integer solution. If this new solution is smaller, we can repeat the process to obtain an infinite descent, which is impossible for positive integers.
Suppose positive integers satisfy
where are fixed positive integers.
Treating this as a quadratic equation in ,
One root is . By Vieta's formulas, the other root is
Since are integers, is also an integer.
Furthermore,
so .
Therefore, is another positive integer solution of the same equation.
This transformation
is called a Vieta jump.
Find all positive integers for which there exist positive integers satisfying
Assume without loss of generality that .
If , then (1) gives
so
Hence or . In either case,
Now suppose . We cannot have , since then
would imply
which contradicts . Thus .
Regard (1) as a quadratic equation in :
One root is . By Vieta's formulas, the other root is
Since
is an integer. Moreover, because and . Since and ,
And satisfies the same equation
Therefore, we can repeatedly descend until one of the two variables equals . From the base case, this forces
Find all positive integer solutions of
Without loss of generality, assume .
Case 1: .
Case 2: .
If , then
So .
Thus we can descend to or , and reverse the jumps to generate all possible solutions.
Let and be the Fibonacci sequence. We want to prove that, starting from , all pairs are of the form
Under a reverse jump, such a pair becomes
or, in the increasing direction,
Using the Fibonacci recurrence,
Similarly,
So the neighboring solutions are
Consequently, all positive integer solutions are
The second root must be shown to be an integer, usually by Vieta's formulas.
Even if the second root is an integer, it might be negative or zero.
We must verify
The fact that is another root does not imply .
A separate inequality is required.
