The American Mathematics Competitions 12 (AMC 12) is a 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice mathematics competition organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). It is designed to test mathematical reasoning, creative problem-solving, and competition skills in algebra, geometry, number theory, trigonometry, counting, and probability. Calculus is excluded.
The AMC 12 is open to students in grade 12 or below who are under 19.5 years old on the competition date.
Students in lower grades, including middle school students, may also participate.
The AMC 12 is generally administered in November.
For 2026:
- AMC 12A: November 5, 2026
- AMC 12B: November 13, 2026
The AMC 12A and AMC 12B are administered on separate dates. Check the official MAA schedule for registration deadlines and any updates.
The AMC 12 contains 25 multiple-choice questions and lasts 75 minutes.
Each question has five answer choices. Calculators are not permitted.
AMC 12 scoring follows these rules:
- Correct answer: 6 points
- Unanswered question: 1.5 points
- Incorrect answer: 0 points
The maximum score is 150.
For example, a student who answers 15 questions correctly, leaves 5 unanswered, and answers 5 incorrectly receives:
15 × 6 + 5 × 1.5 = 97.5 points.
AMC 12A and AMC 12B are different versions of the same competition, administered on separate dates.
Both have 25 questions, a 75-minute time limit, and the same scoring system, but they contain different problems.
Eligible students may take both versions. This gives them two opportunities to qualify for AIME. If a student does not achieve the qualifying score on AMC 12A, they can still qualify through AMC 12B.
The AMC 10 is intended for students in grade 10 or below, while the AMC 12 is intended for students in grade 12 or below, subject to their respective age requirements.
Both competitions have 25 questions and a 75-minute time limit.
The AMC 12 covers more advanced mathematics, including trigonometry, while the AMC 10 focuses on mathematics typically studied through grade 10. Neither competition requires calculus.
The traditional qualification pathways are:
AMC 10 → AIME → USAJMO
AMC 12 → AIME → USAMO
Advancement is not automatic. Students must meet the applicable qualification requirements.
For the 2026 AMC 10 and AMC 12 competitions, the minimum scores required to qualify for the 2027 AIME are 100 and 85, respectively. Additional eligibility requirements apply, including a minimum age of 13 for the 2027 AIME.
The AMC 12 includes questions ranging from introductory to highly challenging. Later questions generally require more sophisticated reasoning and creative problem-solving techniques.
You can explore the difficulty of actual AMC 12 questions on our Problems page.
Visit the Problems page and:
- Filter Competition by AMC 12A or AMC 12B.
- Choose from the five available Difficulty levels.
- Filter by Topic to focus on specific mathematical subjects.
This allows you to compare easier and harder problems within the same topic, identify weaknesses, and progressively increase the difficulty of your practice.

How Many Students Take the AMC 12?
Tens of thousands of students participate in the AMC 12 each year.
In 2025, AMC 12A recorded 20,446 participants and AMC 12B recorded 16,441 participants.
Since some students take both exams, these figures represent exam participation counts and should not be added together to estimate the number of unique students.
What Is a Good AMC 12 Score?
A good AMC 12 score depends on the student's goals.
Starting with the 2026 AMC competitions, a score of 85 or higher meets the AMC 12 score requirement for AIME qualification, subject to the applicable eligibility rules.
Honor Roll and Distinguished Honor Roll score thresholds depend on the performance of participants and may differ between exam versions and years.
What Is the AMC 12 AIME Cutoff?
The AIME cutoff is the minimum AMC 12 score required to qualify for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination.
Historically, the cutoff varied by year and between AMC 12A and AMC 12B.
Starting with the 2026 competition cycle, the AMC 12 AIME qualifying score is fixed at 85, subject to eligibility.
What Are the AMC 12 Honor Roll Cutoffs?
Honor Roll (HR) generally corresponds to the top 5% of scores.
Distinguished Honor Roll (DHR) generally corresponds to the top 1% of scores.
The corresponding score thresholds vary by exam and year. Historical thresholds are displayed in the table above.
Historical Statistics Notes
- All AMC 12 scores and score thresholds are out of 150.
- AIME Floor means the historical AIME qualifying score.
- HR means Honor Roll, generally the Top 5%.
- DHR means Distinguished Honor Roll, generally the Top 1%.
- Total Students means the reported number of participants for that exam version, not necessarily unique individuals across both versions.
- A dash (—) indicates data not available or not yet verified.
- AMC 12 was not split into separate A and B versions in 2000 and 2001.
- There were two AMC 12 competition administrations in calendar year 2021: February and November.
- The 2026 AMC 12 has not yet occurred, so no 2026 score statistics are listed.

Data note: Missing figures are shown as —. Historical entries are transcribed from the supplied statistics file; they have not all been independently verified against MAA reports. The 2025 AMC 12A Problem 25 was voided and all participants received 6 points.
Questionable supplied figures pending confirmation: the 2007 AMC 12A AIME Floor of 97.8 and the 2011 AMC 12A/12B Top 5% HR values of 92. These values are preserved, not replaced.
Historically, USAMO qualification was determined using an index combining AMC 12 and AIME scores.
For example, under the 2025–2026 formula, a student with an AMC 12 score of 120 and an AIME score of 10 would have an index of:
120 + 20 × 10 = 320.
Starting with the 2026–2027 school year, AMC scores are no longer included in the USAMO/USAJMO qualification index. Selection is based primarily on AIME performance, subject to the official MAA selection and eligibility requirements. However, the AMC 12 remains important because it provides a pathway to AIME.
Official selection and eligibility rules may impose additional requirements.
AIME qualification policies have changed over time.
Before 2020
At least the top 5% of AMC 12 participants and the top 2.5% of AMC 10 participants were guaranteed qualification for AIME.
2020–2025
AIME qualifying scores were adjusted based on competition results and qualification policies rather than remaining at a fixed numerical score.
The historical minimum percentile guarantees remained part of the qualification framework.
Starting with the 2026 Competitions
The AIME qualifying score is fixed at 85 for AMC 12 and 100 for AMC 10, subject to eligibility.
Therefore, there is no single fixed percentage of AMC 12 students who will qualify. The percentage depends on how many students achieve the qualifying score.
The AMC 12 recognizes strong performance through several awards.
Official certificate names may differ by year. For example, some AMC 12 certificates use the wording "Certificate of Distinction" for the Top 5% award and "Honor Roll of Distinction" for the Top 1% award.
Historical Top 5% and Top 1% thresholds can be found in the statistics table above.
AMC 12 scores are generally available a few weeks after the competition, although the exact timing varies by year.
Preliminary results, finalized scores, and official AIME qualification announcements may be released at different times.
Examples:
These announcement dates refer to finalized results or qualification announcements, not necessarily the first date on which every student could view an individual score.
Students should check with their competition manager or the official AMC platform for their results.
In the United States and Canada, students generally register through a participating school or an authorized competition manager rather than registering individually with the MAA.
Students outside the United States and Canada should consult the MAA's AMC International program and the designated International Group Leader for their country or region. Registration procedures and availability vary by location.
